AG-PP separation: Call Muhyiddin, Dr M as key witnesses - DAP man

Johor DAP leader Dr Boo Cheng Hau said two former prime ministers should be called to be key witnesses for a Parliamentary Special Select Committee (PSSC) proceeding to separate the powers of the attorney-general and public prosecutor.

He said Muhyiddin Yassin and Dr Mahathir Mohamad should be called for suggestions to create an independent justice system and to explain justice reform.

“They (the former prime ministers) have alleged justice has failed.

“Muhyiddin as a previous prime minister who appointed the former attorney-general and MACC chief should be called as a key witness as to why the allegations of executive interference on the high-profile corruption cases could be substantiated and his suggestions to the creation of an independent justice system.

“Mahathir would be one of the most prominent witnesses to be called to the PSSC to provide valuable opinion and share his experience as to why the reform of justice was never successfully embarked.

“His presence at the PSSC hearing would be crucial for the PSSC to recommend proposals to the government as to what sort of justice system reform should be in place,” Boo said in a statement today.

The former Skudai assemblyperson said for too long, too much power has been vested in the executive in appointing major public positions.

This has invited accusations by the opposition that the executive has interfered in the legal process involving several high-profile cases, he said.

As such, Boo said the PSSC is the most suitable platform to gather input across the divide to forge convincing reforms for the justice system and other institutional reforms.

The PSSC on Human Rights, Election, and Institutional Reform recently said it will initiate proceedings on the separation of powers of the attorney-general and public prosecutor.

Among the cases that will be discussed in this investigation include the appeal dismissal against former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak and former 1MDB CEO Arul Kanda Kandasamy over alleged tampering with the 1MDB audit report, the acquittal of Muhyiddin over four abuse of power charges linked to the Jana Wibawa programme, and the discharge not amounting to acquittal granted to Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. - Mkini
