Police to fully use body cameras starting 2025 - Saifuddin

The police force is expected to fully utilise body cameras beginning in 2025, according to Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

In a written parliamentary reply, he said this was based on the timeline for the government to procure and test the equipment, as well as provide training to police officers on how to use them.

The government had approved an allocation of RM30 million in 2021 for police to obtain body cameras, which officers will use in their daily policing duties, he added.

“At this juncture, the ministry is carrying out the procurement process. The Home Ministry Procurement Board is scheduled to meet next month, while the acceptance letter (for the project) is expected to be issued in December.

“The body cameras are expected to be fully utilised by the first quarter of 2025. This has considered the whole procurement process including testing, field visits, training and certification, which will be carried out between January and December 2024,” Saifuddin said.

This was in response to a question posed by Lim Lip Eng (Pakatan Harapan-Kepong), who wanted to know why police have yet to use body cameras in their daily duties.

To another question from Lim, the minister said the force is conducting research on how it can improve police uniforms in regard to the country’s weather.

In 2021, then prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin announced that enforcement officers would be equipped with body cameras, protecting the police from slander by criminals or unscrupulous people.

The government, he said, had approved an allocation of RM30 million for this purpose.

Last December, Saifuddin reportedly said the government had approved the allocation for the purchase of body cameras and the procurement process was in progress.

It was reported that he had instructed the ministry’s secretary-general to follow up on the matter. - Mkini
