'Wearing nothing' invite: DAP MP refers PN lawmaker to rights committee

Bentong MP Young Syefura Othman has referred Langkawi MP Mohd Suhaimi Abdullah to the Parliamentary Rights and Privileges Committee over his “offensive and lewd remark” with alleged elements of sexual harassment against another DAP MP.

In a statement, Young Syefura cited Suhaimi’s (above) comments made during his Supply Bill 2024 debate yesterday, when he invited Seputeh MP Teresa Kok to visit Langkawi’s beaches “wearing nothing”.

“I regret the behaviour shown by the Langkawi MP. He was reminded multiple times by the deputy speaker to end his speech.

“He was also called out by Kampar MP (Chong Zhemin) who asked him to retract his lewd remark,” said Young Syefura, who is also DAP Women vice-chief.

During his debate, Suhaimi was responding to Kok’s question on whether visitors to Langkawi beaches are allowed to wear shorts.

“I especially want to invite YB Seputeh to come wearing nothing,” said Suhaimi.

“I forgot to say I would like to imagine how it would be if Seputeh came (to Langkawi) wearing nothing,” Suhaimi further said when asked by Chong to retract his comment.

In contempt of sexual harassment law

Young Syefura reminded that the Dewan Rakyat had on July 20 last year passed the Anti-Sexual Harassment Act, criminalising unwanted sexual advances in all forms - verbal, non-verbal, visual, sign, or physical - targeted towards an individual.

“The Langkawi MP’s behaviour is indirectly in contempt of this Act drafted and passed in the Dewan Rakyat,” she said.

“So I hope he will be referred to the Rights and Privileges Committee and faced with appropriate action, as a lesson for all other MPs to not act offensively or make lewd remarks towards another MP,” she said.

When contacted, Kok said she was angry at Suhaimi, but at the same time did not immediately raise an objection in the Dewan Rakyat.

“The speaker Alice Lau is my colleague and she has ordered us to sit down. (But) of course, I’m angry,” she told Malaysiakini.

Kok also denied that she was intentionally provoking Suhaimi when asking if visitors can wear shorts on Langkawi beaches.

“I asked a valid question to the Langkawi MP,” she said, citing Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Tiong King Sing’s claim last month that non-Muslim tourists to Langkawi have complained of being prohibited from wearing shorts and drinking alcohol.

At the time, Tiong’s statement came after Kedah Menteri Besar Sanusi Md Nor denied claims of such a ban in Langkawi. - Mkini
