White paper on progressive wage policy on Nov 30 - Rafizi

PARLIAMENT | Economic Minister Rafizi Ramli clarified today that Budget 2024 does include an allocation for the implementation of a progressive wage policy.

He also said that a white paper on the matter would be presented to the Dewan Rakyat later next month.

Previously, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim made no mention of the progressive wage policy when unveiling Budget 2024, despite expectations that he would underline how the system would work.

Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat today, Rafizi said funds for a pilot project involving the private sector had been parked under allocations for his ministry.

"The government understands that implementation of progressive wages is a bold move which will have a big impact on the economy and public, as this is the first time the government is directly intervening to raise wages in the private sector.

"As such, the decision is that implementation must involve all quarters and be done as a nationwide united effort," he added.

Rafizi said that a white paper will be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat on Nov 30 detailing the basic aspects and mechanisms of the policy.
