RM8.5mil set for out-of-pocket expenses in Melaka tourism drive

The Melaka government previously received a special RM25 million allocation to conserve and preserve Unesco World Heritage Sites.

MELAKA: The Melaka government has allocated as much as RM8.5 million for out-of-pocket expenses or costs for the organisation of Visit Melaka Year 2024 (TMM2024), says state tourism, heritage, arts and culture committee chairman Abdul Razak Abdul Rahman.

Razak (BN-Telok Mas) said the allocation, among others, would finance the organisation of 76 events in conjunction with TMM2024.

“Another RM6.6 million is for permanent investment, which includes several development projects related to tourism in the state.

“These include developing new tourism products, such as a river cruise in Sungai Linggi, and the construction of a floating restaurant, also in the same area,” he said at the Melaka assembly sitting in Seri Negeri here.

He was responding to Noor Helmy Abdul Halem (BN-Duyong), who asked about the out-of-pocket expenses and permanent investment costs for TMM2024.

Razak also said the tourism, arts and culture ministry had previously channelled RM10.1 million, while the state government had provided an allocation of RM5 million for promotional materials and campaigns, as well as publicity, both local and abroad.

He said the state government previously received a special RM25 million allocation for the conservation and preservation of Unesco World Heritage Sites, indirectly supporting the organisation of TMM2024.

“Of the total, RM12.8 million was used for the development, maintenance, preservation and conservation of heritage sites, RM6.6 million for publications, and RM5.6 million for heritage programmes,” he said.

Razak said the state government was confident that 15 to 18 million domestic and international tourists would visit Melaka next year in conjunction with TMM2024.

This would return RM29.9 billion to the state government, as the service sector contributes 48% to the state’s gross domestic product, he said. - FMT
