GEORGE TOWN: Penang Development Corporation (PDC) has signed a lease agreement with MyEG Lodging (NC) Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of MyEG Services Bhd, to build a workers’ hostel worth RM108 million in Batu Kawan.

Penang chief minister Chow Kon Yeow said PDC had called for requests for proposal between Sept 29 and Nov 29, 2022.

He added that PDC had received three proposals which were presented to PDC’s board and acquisition board, following which MyEG was selected.

Chow, who is also PDC chairman, said the project would involve building a workers’ hostel in Batu Kawan Industrial Park 3 on an 8.39ha plot of land.

He said the growth of the industrial sector in the state had indirectly led to increasing demand for workers’ housing.

“A centralised, controlled and planned development of workers’ hostels shows the commitment of the state government to continuously supporting vast industrial development in Penang, as well as helping the state address problems such as public complaints on the influx of migrant workers in residential areas.

“This will deal with the issue of the drop in property value when migrant workers move into a residential area, as well as arrivals of undocumented foreign nationals,” Chow said in his speech at the agreement signing ceremony here.

Meanwhile, Malay Mail quoted MyEG director Jimmy Wong Abdullah as saying that the workers’ village is expected to house at least 8,000 people upon completion in 2026.

“Along with this project, MyEG will offer other services such as application for work permits and fully equipped facilities and amenities, including surau, sundry store and recreational areas,” he was quoted as saying.

He said all facilities will be in accordance with the standards set by the International Labour Organization. - FMT
