And the newsmaker of 2023 is…

POLL | For the past 23 years, Malaysiakini has maintained a tradition of naming a top newsmaker as we bring the curtain down on the year that is ending.

A newsmaker is defined as “someone whose actions make news headlines, who affects the course of public discourse, and creates an impact on Malaysians, for better or worse”.

Malaysiakini nominated 15 candidates for the Newsmaker of 2023.

A total of 655 respondents participated in the poll. They voted by indicating their preference for each of the nominees - with zero being the lowest and 10 being the highest.

This is how they voted:

Nahvin Muthusamy - Award-winning student, advocate for equality in education.

Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Kamal - Bersatu Youth leader.

Siti Kasim - Human rights lawyer, and independent politician.

Muhyiddin Yassin - Perikatan Nasional chairperson, Bersatu president.

Haris Ibrahim - Lawyer, human rights and political activist.

Abdul Hadi Awang - PAS president.

Fahmi Fadzil - Communications minister.

Sanusi Md Nor - Kedah menteri besar.

Khairy Jamaluddin - Former health minister.

Fadhlina Sidek - Education minister.

Michelle Yeoh - Oscar-winning actress.

Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman - Former minister, facing jail after conviction.

Ahmad Zahid Hamidi - Umno president and deputy prime minister, had corruption charges dropped.

Anthony Loke - DAP secretary-general and transport minister.

Anwar Ibrahim - prime minister, PKR president, Pakatan Harapan chairperson.
