Defection talk mere fantasy, says Anwar

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said he was confident of the strength of his government.

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has dismissed speculation about potential defections involving government MPs, describing it as “a mere fantasy”.

Anwar said he remained resolute and unfazed by such rumours, insisting that his government had a strong majority in Parliament.

“Our strength in Parliament is clearly unassailable. Yes, some may cross over, and if indeed there are 50 to 60, then I cannot stop them.

“But based on the current law, that (defections) is a mere fantasy,” he said, likely alluding to the anti-hopping law.

Anwar said this in a televised interview with TV3 tonight.

The Pakatan Harapan chairman said he was also not perturbed by talk of defections as he knew the strength of his government.

“God willing, with that strength, we will focus on the nation’s development.”

Last week, Sinar Harian quoted Bersatu Supreme Council member Redzuan Yusof as saying that there was talk government MPs, including from Barisan Nasional and PKR, will support Perikatan Nasional to form a new government. -FMT
