PETALING JAYA: The Penang occupational safety and health department (DOSH) says it has launched an immediate investigation into the employer of a maintenance worker who died in an elevator accident on Dec 26.
R Tinesh Kumar, 28, died while working on an elevator at a shopping complex at Jalan Burmah in George Town.
He was discovered unconscious with his head trapped between the elevator doors.
In a statement today, Penang DOSH director Hairozie Asri said the department has suspended all elevator maintenance work at the site.
“The investigation is being conducted in accordance with Section 15 of the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994, which pertains to the employer’s obligation for its employees’ safety and well-being during work activities.
“If violations of the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 contributed to the incident, the employer may face legal consequences,” he said.
Hairozie said DOSH will obtain documents, compile witness testimonies, and examine the elevator systems. - FMT
