Kg Setia Jaya folk can stay until relocation resolves - Wangsa Maju MP

The 512 residents of Kampung Setia Jaya in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur are granted temporary relief as the Tunku Abdul Rahman College (KTAR) Education Foundation allowed them to stay while their relocation issue is being resolved.

Wangsa Maju MP Zahir Hassan conveyed this to them at a press conference at Surau Madinah in the village today.

According to Zahir (above), the decision was reached after a meeting between Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa and representatives of the KTAR Education Foundation, namely Lim Keng Cheng and Yew Teong Lok.

"KTAR explicitly stated that they are willing to allow residents to continue staying here until the housing issue is resolved," he told reporters.

Furthermore, Zahir stated that KTAR is also prepared to allocate a portion of the total 70.4ha of land for the redevelopment of housing for the original residents of Kampung Setia Jaya.

He added that this issue should not be politicised by any party as it involves the well-being of the village residents.

In a related development, Zaliha said replacing homes for the residents was also discussed and the best solution would be further detailed.

"Overall, it was a positive discussion, and I believe this issue can be resolved after being deferred for more than 30 years.

"The TAR Education Foundation, in principle, has no objection to allowing residents to continue residing in Kampung Setia Jaya while this housing issue is being resolved," Zaliha said in a statement today.

On Dec 19, the Kuala Lumpur High Court granted land ownership to KTAR and ordered residents to vacate their residences within 18 months.

As a result, Kampung Setia Jaya Action Committee chairperson Noorsham Din stated that they would still file an appeal against the eviction notice.

‘No provocation’

Meanwhile, Kampung Setia Jaya Residents' Association chairperson Mohd Asri Sapuan expressed hope that residents would not take any provocative actions or make statements that could hurt the feelings of others, especially fellow villagers.

He emphasised that the goal of all residents is to obtain replacement homes, therefore, any provocation will only worsen the situation and burden the residents with additional problems.

Previously, the media reported that around 30 residents of Kampung Setia Jaya held a peaceful gathering to urge the government to intervene in the eviction.

"We hope residents will not be agitated and take any negative actions. The goal of all residents is the same, which is to get replacement homes, so there is no need to worsen the situation and burden the residents with other problems," Asri said after the press conference.

Elaborating, Asri said claims that the government did not intervene on the matter were untrue as Zaliha's stance clearly shows the government's commitment to assist them.

"If we look at it, the previous government did nothing, so why blame the current government? The current government's efforts can be considered good compared to before; you can meet the federal (territories) minister in just two minutes," he added. - Mkini
