Malaysia to champion batik to tourists

Batik sales exceeded RM80 million from January to October this year, according to the tourism, arts and culture ministry.

PETALING JAYA: The tourism, arts and culture ministry (Motac) will soon focus on batik production as it plans to promote the traditional attire to foreign tourists.

The move is in line with Malaysia assuming the chairmanship of Asean in 2025 as well as activities under the Visit Malaysia Year (VMY) 2026 campaign, Bernama reported.

The ministry’s secretary-general, Roslan Abdul Rahman, said it will introduce and promote batik to foreign tourists visiting Malaysia in future.

“We will encourage 820 batik entrepreneurs to get involved. After all, this is the best sector for tourists.

“In 2025, we will take over the chair of Asean, while 2026 is the Visit Malaysia Year, so we are planning the events to be announced at the end of this year or the beginning of next year,” he told reporters after launching the official Malaysia Batik Day 2023 at Kompleks Kraft here.

Roslan said batik sales had exceeded RM80 million from January to October this year.

Commenting on the celebration of batik day, Roslan invited the public to come and see and feel with their own hands the quality of Malaysian batik through sales, exhibitions and demonstrations. - FMT
