6-day ‘blockade’ outside US embassy a success, says Tian Chua

Tian Chua and Dr Mahathir Mohamad were among those who spoke at the gathering last night.

KUALA LUMPUR: The six-day “blockade” outside the United States embassy over the current conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip has been a success, according to its organiser Sekretariat Solidariti Palestin (SSP).

However, SSP senior member Tian Chua said they will not be satisfied until Palestine’s safety is assured and it “regains its sovereignty”.

Tian Chua, a former PKR vice-president and ex-Batu MP, said the group will look at other ways to continue piling the pressure on the US over the conflict in the Middle East.

“I’m satisfied with the results (of the six-day gathering) because we have stood in solidarity with the Palestinians.

“However, we are not satisfied at this stage. The final goal is to restore peace and sovereignty of Palestine,” he told reporters.

He added that they have yet to decide on the details of future campaigns, with more discussions needed.

At the close of the gathering late last night, attendees chanted their demands for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Palestine; the end to the “apartheid system” in Palestine; a halt to any ethnic cleansing against Palestinians; and lasting peace for Palestine.

“From Jan 1, 2024, and every day after, we will stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people. We will not waver in our commitment and we will continue to intensify our efforts to achieve peace, justice, security and dignity for an independent Palestine,” they chanted.

The gathering was attended by NGOs and political figures over six days since Dec 26.

Last night, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad addressed the crowd, urging Malaysians to continue boycotting products or brands linked to Israel or any country supporting Israel.

Others who addressed the crowd at the gathering included Amanah president Mohamad Sabu, PKR vice-president Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, DAP central executive committee member Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali and acting Muda president Amira Aisya Abd Aziz. - FMT
