PETALING JAYA: No Malaysians have been reported to be involved or affected by the massive earthquake that hit Japan earlier today, the foreign ministry said.

In a brief statement, Wisma Putra, however, told Malaysians in the affected areas to remain vigilant and follow the latest updates and advice issued by the local authorities.

The ministry also said it was monitoring the developments in the aftermath of the earthquake that struck the central and west coast of Japan.

“Malaysia extends its deepest sympathies and condolences to the victims and families affected by the earthquake, as well as to the people and government of Japan,” it said.

The earthquake, with a preliminary magnitude of 7.6, destroyed buildings and knocked out power to thousands of homes, disrupting travel in the area.

It also triggered tsunami warnings in the country, South Korea, North Korea and parts of Russia’s far east. - FMT
