PAS vows to regain Tanjung Karang after MP switches support

After obeying the leadership’s instructions to hand over the Tanjung Karang parliamentary seat to Bersatu’s Zulkafperi Hanapi for the last general election, Selangor PAS is now determined to regain the seat and the two corresponding state assembly seats.

Selangor PAS Ulama Council head Mohd Zamri Mohd Zainuldin said Zulkafperi’s decision to support the government and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim was indeed a very disappointing surprise.

“We abided by the party’s decision that decided he (Zulkafperi) would be nominated to contest in the Tanjung Karang parliamentary seat.

“However, now he has taken this position, we will no longer be bound to continue to support him

“For us, we will try to maintain the victory in Parliament and the two state assembly seats under it,” Zamri (above) said.

Yesterday, Malaysiakini reported that Zulkafperi became the latest opposition MP to declare his support for Anwar.

According to him, the declaration of support was made without any coercion or pressure from any party.

“I do it with all my heart for the benefit of the people of Tanjung Karang,” he said.

The move was considered quite surprising as he had criticized the government and Anwar just a few days earlier.

‘Leaders come and go’

In 2022’s GE15, Zulkafperi won the Tanjung Karang parliamentary seat by defeating four other candidates. He obtained 18,054 votes, winning by 2,180 votes over his nearest challenger, Habibah Mohd Yusof of BN.

The two state seats - Sungai Burong and Permatang - were also won by PN when Selangor held state elections in 2023.

Tanjung Karang is a seat synonymous with former senior Umno leader Noh Omar. However, Umno did not name Noh to defend the seat in the 2022 GE.

It saw PN fielding Noh’s daughter, Nurul Syazwani, as their candidate in Permatang. She won with a margin of 1,728 votes, defeating the Pakatan Harapan candidate, Yahya Sahri.

Commenting further, Zamri said that even though Zulkafperi has shifted his support, he will continue with their “struggle creed”.

“Leaders come and go, but the struggle must continue,” he said.

The Sungai Burong assemblyperson said PAS will continue to serve as usual and help realise the aspirations of the community in that area.

“Goodbye. We continue to serve all those who put their trust in us,” he said. - Mkini
