PN meet: No mention of censuring Dr M in Hamzah's statement

In the lead-up to this week's Perikatan Nasional supreme council meeting, Gerakan president Dominic Lau said he would push the coalition to censure Dr Mahathir Mohamad over the latter's racist remarks about Indian Malaysians.

However, whether the matter was raised or any decision was made is unclear.

In a statement summarising last night's meeting, PN secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin did not mention any such discussions concerning Mahathir.

Instead, he said the supreme council discussed cost of living issues.

"The supreme council discussed the current cost of living situation, which is becoming increasingly desperate, including on the increase of water tariffs and unanimously urges the federal government to prioritise economic issues and solving the people's problems," he said in a statement today.

He said PN also discussed plans to hold a PN elected representatives convention and a retreat soon to strengthen its component parties.

Besides that, the supreme council also agreed to appoint PAS Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden, who is also the Alor Setar MP, as the new PN Youth chief.

Lau was among those present at yesterday's meeting.

Last week, Mahathir claimed that Indian Malaysians are not completely loyal to the country as they still identify with their country of origin and speak Tamil primarily.

He said one should identify as Malay and speak Malay as their primary language to have the right to call the country their own.

Following that, Lau told Malaysiakini that he would raise the matter to the PN meeting this week, and push to censure Mahathir for the inappropriate remarks.
