T20 parents should pay MRSM admission fee - alumni president

T20 families should pay a fee if they want their children to study at the Mara Junior Science College (MRSM), said Anak Sains Mara (Ansara) president Mohd Fadzil Yusof.

He expressed cynicism over some T20 parents arguing that their children should study at MRSM to “experience hardship”.

“If they (T20 parents) can afford to send their children to private schools then why should they seek admission into MRSM?

“I was curious about it and was shocked to hear that they wanted their children to ‘experience hardship’.

“It seems to them MRSM is the best place for them to mingle with B40 children,” Fadzil said during a Wacana Sinar forum titled ‘MRSM for B40 only?’ last Tuesday.

Also present were panellists Mara chairperson Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki and former MRSM teacher Nur Aziera Mohd Ramli.

In 2017, the then BN administration mulled establishing paid-MRSM schools to cater for those from the higher-income group.

On May 19 last year, Asyraf mentioned that no serious initiative had been taken so far regarding the proposal.

“We haven’t taken any serious initiative because the main issue is how to fulfil the wishes of alumni members who now reach 220,000 people, with most of them from the T20 group who competed with the B40 group at MRSM,” he was reported as saying.

Falsifying income documents

However, on Dec 20, the Mara chairperson lamented that some parents have resorted to falsifying their income level, claiming to be from B40, for their children to gain admission into MRSM.

“Please do not falsify (your) income just to be classified as B40 to secure your child’s admission to MRSM.

“Pity (your) children who study without any blessings, having unfairly gained from the rights of other less fortunate individuals,” Asyraf said on Facebook.

On that note, Fadzil reiterated his point in getting T20 parents to pay an entry fee if they want a place for their children in MRSM.

“If they can pay up to RM3,000 to send their children to private schools, I don’t see why they can’t pay MRSM.

“Besides, paying a fee (to MRSM) is better than establishing private schools under Mara,” he added. - Mkini
