KOTA KINABALU: Nine people were detained to assist investigations into a brawl between locals and foreigners at a factory in East Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park on Tuesday afternoon.

Kota Kinabalu police chief Mohd Zaidi Abdullah said four local men and five foreigners were detained to assist investigations under Section 148 of the Penal Code.

He said police received a report at 5.30pm saying the complainant was punched by a Chinese man, leading to a brawl, and that the complainant had suffered minor injuries to both knees.

The brawl is believed to have started when a Chinese worker allegedly bumped into a local worker while they were lining up to clock out after their shift.

“The Chinese suspect bumped into the local worker’s shoulder but it was ignored. Another Chinese worker suddenly shouted and pointed at the local worker before inviting him outside to fight while holding a stick.

“The local worker ignored the invitation but once outside the factory, the victim was suddenly punched from behind. This led to a scuffle before the situation turned chaotic as more individuals from both sides joined in,” Zaidi said.

Zaidi said the brawl was successfully dispersed by security guards and other factory workers. - FMT
