Deputy foreign minister to address Human Rights Council today

Deputy Foreign Minister Mohamad Alamin will deliver Malaysia’s national statement at the Human Rights Council today at 6.30pm Malaysian time, as well as at the Conference on Disarmament tomorrow at 4pm Malaysian time.

The session at the Human Rights Council will be broadcast live via UN WebTV.

In a statement issued today by Wisma Putra, Mohamad (above) will lead the Malaysian delegation to the High-Level Segment of the Human Rights Council and High-Level Segment of the Conference on Disarmament, from Feb 27 to 29 in Geneva, Switzerland.

“At the Human Rights Council, Malaysia will highlight the progress made in the promotion and protection of human rights.

“Simultaneously, Malaysia will make a strong representation in support of respect for the human rights of the Palestinian people, counter Islamophobia, highlight challenges posed by the influx of refugees, improve working methods of the Human Rights Council and strengthen collaboration with the United Nations (UN) Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR),” read the statement.

Apart from that, Wisma Putra said that at the Conference on Disarmament, Malaysia will focus on efforts for a world free of nuclear weapons and call upon member states to swiftly agree on a Programme of Work for 2024 for the conference to address the abolition of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction.

According to the statement, the deputy minister’s participation is in line with Malaysia’s active role in international fora, particularly in promoting fundamental human rights for all and towards achieving universal peace and security.

Mohamad is also expected to hold discussions with his counterparts and heads of international organisations in Geneva on issues of mutual interest.

Among others, he is expected to exchange views to strengthen cooperation in human rights and humanitarian assistance and revitalise the work of the Conference on Disarmament.
