'Mega' rally for Palestine in KL this Saturday

A major rally in solidarity with Palestine is set to take place in Kuala Lumpur this Saturday.

The “Mega Rally For Palestine” will see demonstrators march 5km, starting near the US Embassy and ending at Padang Merbok near Parliament.

The organisers, Palestine Solidarity Secretariat (SSP), plan to make stops at KLCC, the Renaissance Hotel, Maju Junction, and Jalan Raja Laut, along the way.

The march, which is expected to begin at 2pm, would take at least an hour to complete, based on estimates.

SSP said it has secured police approval for the rally.

SSP spokesperson Tian Chua said some 100 civil society groups and political parties are expected to join the rally.

Chua added that among those who have confirmed their attendance are Amanah president Mohamad Sabu and Pejuang president Mukhriz Mahathir.

“We hope this Saturday can reflect the unity of Malaysians in presenting a strong united voice in supporting the Palestinian struggle,” he said at a press conference announcing the protest details.

Fellow spokesperson Hishammuddin Rais, meanwhile, said some 200 security and medical personnel will be present during the rally.

Prolonged attacks

Gaza has been under a prolonged retaliatory attack from Israel since last October following an attack carried out by Hamas against Israel.

Almost 30,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed so far.

The Israeli death toll is around 1,400.

Previously in December, SSP carried out a six-day protest, in which they camped out near the US Embassy.

The US has been accused of being complicit in Israel’s assault on Gaza.

US President Joe Biden had said last night that Israel is open to a ceasefire in conjunction with Ramadan if a deal is reached to release some Israeli hostages held by Hamas. - Mkini
