PETALING JAYA: A Malaysian business association based in New Zealand is teaming up with its Singapore counterpart for an annual exhibition in June with hopes it can play a role in enhancing trade between Malaysia and New Zealand.

Dave Ananth, president of the New Zealand Malaysia Business Association, said trade between the two countries has been maintained at a relatively modest level.

“New Zealand is not among Malaysia’s largest trading partners,” he said.

Last year, New Zealand’s imports from Malaysia amounted to US$2.03 billion, while exports to Malaysia totalled US$785.89 million, he said.

However, Anand wants to enhance New Zealand’s significance in certain sectors such as commodities and agricultural products. He said New Zealand is globally renowned for its high-quality agricultural products particularly in dairy, meat and horticulture.

“Strengthening cooperation in agriculture and food security could further enhance these trade relations,” he said.

Anand said teaming up with the Singapore New Zealand Business Association for the coming FieldDays 2024 exhibition would help both associations to tap into the lucrative New Zealand market while exploring opportunities for collaboration with local enterprises

Malaysia and Singapore are also looking at innovative solutions ranging from sustainable farming practices to advanced agrotech solutions, he said.

When it came to sustainable farming practices, which was a vital factor in food productivity, there is no better place to learn from than the farmers of New Zealand.

EW Tan, president of the Singapore association, said collaboration between nations and businesses would drive innovation and economic growth.

Strengthening trade ties between Malaysia, Singapore, and New Zealand would help enhance bilateral trade relations and avenues for investment and business expansion, Anand and Tan said. - FMT
