Uphold Agong’s decree, stop stoking anger over socks issue, says DAP

In the 5am incident today at a KK Mart outlet in Kuantan, several items on display at the front of the store were set alight by a petrol bomb.

PETALING JAYA: DAP has called for all Malaysians to respect and uphold the decree by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim, that all parties stop “fueling anger” over the sale of socks bearing the word “Allah”.

The party’s central executive committee (CEC) condemned the firebombing of a KK Mart outlet in Kuantan, Pahang, this morning, saying that if the matter is not handled properly, it could ignite more racial conflict.

“The DAP CEC also upholds the decree of the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, who has called these petrol bomb incidents a worrying sign that needs serious attention and stern action to curb the spread of the flames of racism.

“Although the committee understands that the socks issue has hurt the feelings of Muslims, any action taken should be in line with the law, and not take the path of violence,” it said in a statement.

The committee urged the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the two incidents and bring the perpetrators to justice.

“The committee also urges all rational and moderate Malaysians who prioritise harmonious and peaceful relations to reject these acts of violence,” it said.

In the 5am incident today at a KK Mart outlet in Kuantan, several items on display at the front of the store were set alight by a petrol bomb.

Kuantan police chief Wan Zahari Wan Busu said the workers at the store were immediately able to put out the blaze using a fire extinguisher.

He said an initial investigation showed that the perpetrator may have thrown the petrol bomb from a distance to avoid being caught by the store’s security cameras.

He said police were checking CCTV recordings from nearby stores and searching the area for evidence.

Earlier this week, a petrol bomb was also thrown at a KK Mart store in Bidor, Perak, at about the same time.

Thrown by a person who has yet to be identified, the petrol bomb landed in front of the store but did not explode. - FMT
