KUALA LUMPUR: An Indian NGO hopes to meet Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to discuss efforts to enhance the community’s economy.

The Malaysian Tamil Awakening and Consciousness Association said it had sent a memorandum to the Prime Minister’s Office in October last year to seek a meeting with Anwar to discuss the matter.

“What we want is for the prime minister to look into our memorandum and see how the government is able to help us,” its secretary, SM Vinthaikumaran, told a press conference here today.

“We don’t expect him to accept all our suggestions but let’s see what can be done so that the Indian community’s economy and equity will be raised.”

Vinthaikumaran said the NGO was in touch with the PMO and had been told that the meeting would take place some time in June or July, although no date had been set.

He said the agenda proposed by the NGO for the community would take up to 20 years to be fully implemented.

The objectives include raising the community’s earning capabilities and asset accumulation, supporting their small businesses, and increasing their involvement in the contractor services. - FMT
