PETALING JAYA: The Melaka fisheries department has called for a suspension of mussel fishing from Melaka waters and the sale of the shellfish, following eight cases of food poisoning in Negeri Sembilan.

“Mussel farmers using stake, rack, and p-line systems in Melaka waters are requested to temporarily cease production, sale and collection of the shellfish,” it said in a statement.

It added that it had been in touch with the Port Dickson Hospital, which was treating multiple cases of suspected food poisoning from mussel consumption.

The mussels are understood to have been sourced from Melaka and Negeri Sembilan waters.

Yesterday, it was reported that two people were in intensive care at the hospital, suffering from paralysis.

Negeri Sembilan health director Harlina Abdul Rashid said the two were among eight cases of suspected poisoning and that all had said they had eaten mussels bought from two markets in the area.

The fisheries department said the results of laboratory tests to establish whether dangerous algae were present in the mussels from Port Dickson would be ready tomorrow. The department said it was also conducting tests on other shellfish.

It was also reported that the management of the Telok Kemang Fishermen’s Association had suspended sales of local mussels and clams in response to the scare. - FMT
