PETALING JAYA: National women’s squash champion S Sivasangari won her first PSA World Tour Gold-level title today.
In the final of the inaugural London Squash Classic at the Alexandra Palace, she defeated world No 2 Hania El Hammamy of Egypt in five games.
In the closely fought tie which lasted 81 minutes, Sivasangari prevailed by winning 11-9, 5-11, 13-11, 12-14, 11-8.
Sivasangari, who is ranked 16 in the world, had earlier beaten world No 4 Nele Gilis of Belgium in the semi-final, following her shock victory over the world No 1 Nour El Sherbini (Egypt) in the quarterfinals.
The 2022 Asian Games champion was the first player outside the top 10 to beat El Sherbini since Annie Au of Hong Kong, during the first round of the Cleveland Classic 2015 in Ohio. - FMT
