The Rawang Tolak Incinerator Network (RTI) pressure group has urged the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election candidates to state their stance on the proposed Batu Arang incinerator project.
In a statement, RTI said so far, two assemblypersons - Rawang representative Chua Wei Kiat (Pakatan Harapan-PKR) and Kuang’s Rafiq Abdullah (Perikatan Nasional-Bersatu) have supported opposing voices on the issue.
“Therefore, RTI urges the four KKB by-election candidates to clarify whether they will advocate for the implementation of waste segregation at the source through legislative measures in the Selangor state assembly upon assuming office.
“(Also) Do they endorse the contentious Batu Arang incinerator project despite its potential environmental hazards?” the group asked today.
Batu Arang is about 44km away from Kuala Kubu Baharu.
RTI further expressed the intention to personally meet with the four candidates to discuss the incinerator issue in depth.
In the statement, it slammed the Selangor government’s persistence in wanting to proceed with the project despite opposition and protests from Rawang residents.
“The proposed construction of the incinerator, with an estimated cost of RM4.5 billion, is deemed economically unsound.
“Moreover, the incinerator is expected to emit carbon dioxide, exacerbating global warming, and release highly toxic dioxins, issues which the state government has failed to satisfactorily address,” it said.
The four-cornered fight in the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election will be contested by four candidates - Pang Sock Tao (Pakatan Harapan-DAP), Khairul Azhari Saut (Perikatan Nasional-Bersatu), Hafizah Zainudin (Parti Rakyat Malaysia), and Nyau Ke Xin (Independent).
The by-election is being held following the death of incumbent Lee Kee Hiong, 58, on March 21 due to cancer.
The Election Commission set the voting day on May 11 with early voting on May 7. - Mkini
