Special committee to review Bersatu reps' response to 'loyalty' notice

Bersatu elected representatives have submitted their response to a party notice to “affirm their loyalty” after the deadline ended today with a special committee set to meet and review the letters.

This includes letters from seven Bersatu lawmakers who threw their support behind Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

It was reported that the replies party secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin received from the seven were deemed unsatisfactory.

Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal said the special committee will scrutinise the responses.

“The committee will convene to determine the subsequent action,” he was quoted as saying by Free Malaysia Today.

Two weeks ago, Hamzah sent letters containing instructions to all of Bersatu’s elected representatives.

The instructions were to obey the party’s leadership and to announce that they did not support the coalition government.

“Especially for the six (MPs) who announced their support for the other side, they were given additional instructions.

“The media can meet with them to ask what special orders I have given them as the secretary-general after I received instructions from the supreme council,” he told a press conference at the Perikatan Nasional headquarters in Publika, Kuala Lumpur.

Party members were expected to respond by carrying out the instructions and sending the letter back within 14 days from May 17 - the date the instructions were given. The deadline for their response is today.

The six Bersatu MPs who pledged support for Anwar were Zulkafperi Hanapi (Tanjong Karang), Zahari Kechik (Jeli), Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar), Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang), Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan) and Mohd Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang).

Selat Klang assemblyperson Abdul Rashid Asari also announced his support for the premier.

Vacating seats

On May 17, Bersatu deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu said the party was set to file a notice to the Dewan Rakyat seeking to vacate the seats of those six MPs.

On April 5, Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin said his party would take action against the seven representatives after Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

Before that, the Registrar of Societies approved an amendment to the Bersatu constitution, enabling the party to act against the six members. Under the newly amended constitution, these lawmakers must immediately vacate their seats.

The amendment to Article 10 of Bersatu’s constitution stipulates matters of resignation and dismissal of party members.

Under the approved amendment, any Bersatu elected representative who defected from the party would automatically cease to be a member of the party.

In doing so, the defectors will also trigger the anti-hopping law per Article 49A of the Federal Constitution and their seats will be vacated. - Mkini
