G25 co-founder Noor Farida passes away

 

One of G25’s co-founders, Noor Farida Ariffin, has passed away. She was 76.

According to Free Malaysia Today, G25 executive secretary Jasmine Zulkifli confirmed her passing.

Farida was a co-founder of G25, a civil society organisation made up of influential Malay individuals seeking to play a constructive role as a voice of moderation on religion.

They also advocate for reforms to strengthen the institutions of law and order and improve the standards of governance in the country.

Members of the group have included former Finance Ministry secretary-general Mohd Sheriff Mohd Kassim, former Education Ministry director-general of education Asiah Abu Samah, and former Court of Appeal judge Mohd Hishamudin Mohd Yunus.

Farida served in the civil service for 36 years. She was a magistrate and Sessions Court judge before being seconded to the Foreign Ministry.

She served as the Malaysian ambassador to the Netherlands from 2000 to 2007. Later, she became the director-general of Wisma Putra’s research, treaties and international law department.

She retired from service in 2012.

On Jan 3, 2019, Farida was appointed as chairperson of the Human Resources Development Fund.

However, her tenure was cut short after the Pakatan Harapan government collapsed in February 2020.

Farida was then replaced with Nelson Renganathan, the chairperson of an international school as well as several other businesses. - Mkini
