Police barracks death: Victim's family heads to Bukit Aman on Saturday

 

The family of a civilian found dead inside a police housing complex in George Town, Penang plans to go to Bukit Aman this Saturday to demand an independent investigation into the March incident.

According to United for Rights of Malaysian Party secretary-general Satees Muniandy, the family has concerns over Northeast district police’s investigations as the incident had occurred at their premises.

This was especially after police declared that the victim died due to a fall from a height and that police found no foul play in his death.

“The victim’s family believes that he was not someone who would resort to suicide, and in fact the victim was an athlete who had fighting spirit.

“Did the police investigate every aspect of this incident, or were they trying to close the case as quickly as possible because it happened in their housing complex and perhaps had links to a police officer or their family members?” he asked in a statement.

Unanswered questions

Satees said many questions arise in the case and authorities have yet to answer.

The family wanted to know what the victim was doing at the barrack and with whom he had met before the incident.

Satees claimed that the victim’s phone record showed that he had been in contact with a police officer who lived at the housing complex.

“His WhatsApp record found on his laptop also showed that the victim had been in front of one of the houses there. So, did he fall or was he pushed down?

“What was the role played by the people who lived at the house in this incident? Have the investigators ruled out that they have nothing to do with it?” he asked.

The politician stressed that it was inappropriate for the district police to investigate the case as the incident could have involved one of its members.

Thus, Satees said, they will go to Bukit Aman this Saturday to submit a memorandum demanding the Inspector-General of Police to appoint an independent investigation team.

A separate memorandum will also be sent to the Penang prosecutor’s office to request an inquest into the victim’s death.

No foul play

Yesterday, Northeast district police chief Razlam Ab Hamid in a statement said the incident happened on March 18 at a police housing complex in George Town.

He said police have classified the case as sudden death after investigation found no signs of foul play.

“The Penang Hospital also found that the victim’s cause of death was multiple injuries due to a fall from a high place.

“This case has been classified as sudden death and is still under police investigation pending post-mortem results and pathology report,” Razlam had said. - Mkini
