PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim paid tribute to Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed in an Israeli strike in Iran early this morning.
Anwar said detractors who had criticised him for meeting with Haniyeh in the past failed to appreciate the Hamas leader’s desire for a peaceful Middle East and a Palestinian nation restored to its rightful dignity.
Anwar said in a Facebook post.I mourn the loss of a dear friend and a valiant advocate for his people. Al-Fatihah,
He also condemned in the
the assassination of Haniyeh, who was Hamas’s political bureau chairman.strongest possible terms
“This was a murder of the most heinous kind, plainly designed to derail ongoing talks aimed at ending the carnage in Gaza that has claimed over 40,000 lives. It is patently clear that this could only have been carried out in an environment of utter impunity.
he added.Only the heedless and unconscionable will not see the need to intensify pressure on Israel to stop their murderous rampage,
Anwar also said he was deeply concerned about what Haniyeh’s death would mean for the Palestinian people who had been subjected to so much pain, hardship and suffering for decades.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards earlier confirmed the death of Haniyeh, hours after he attended a swearing-in ceremony of the country’s new president, and said it was investigating the matter.
The news, which came less than 24 hours after Israel claimed to have killed the Hezbollah commander it said was behind a deadly strike in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, appears to set back chances of any imminent ceasefire agreement in Gaza.
Meanwhile, Hamas has vowed that Haniyeh’s assassination
.will not go unanswered
Separately, the Malaysian foreign ministry called for an immediate and thorough investigation into Haniyeh’s killing and for those responsible to be brought to justice.
Wisma Putra also urged all parties to exercise restraint while the facts were being established. - FMT
