TikTok removes alleged illegal adoption account after Teo intervenes

Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching has requested TikTok to take action against an account that allegedly provides illegal adoption services.

Taking to Instagram, Teo said DAP deputy secretary for international affairs Kasthuri Patto had informed her of the matter following Malaysiakini’s report.

“I have notified TikTok and requested that they remove the content. TikTok has since found the content and flagged more of his clone contents.

“Action is being taken to block, ban, and report him (account holder) to the police,” she said, adding that police were also notified.

Malaysiakini’s check at about 6pm found the account had been blocked.

Earlier, Kasthuri and another DAP representative, Bavani Shasha Veraiah, called on the police and MACC to investigate the account, pointing out that such services exploit desperate families looking to make quick money and those seeking to adopt.

Scamming families

When contacted, Kasthuri told Malaysiakini that the account owner was scamming families who wanted to adopt babies.

She said following Malaysiakini’s report, a man who alleged the scammer had used his parents’ home address got in touch with her.

“The son reported the matter to the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission in April after about 30 couples came to the house looking for the scammer.

“He alleged that the scammer would wait for interested couples to transfer the money before blocking their numbers.

“The son also told me that the money siphoned ranges between RM1,000 and RM20,000,” she said.

However, Kasthuri said the son claimed that to date, the authorities had yet to take action.

She added that some couples came from Johor Bahru at 1am to get babies.

“The issue here is that we don’t know if it is a scam account or if he has actually sold any babies.

“Scam or real baby adoption syndicate, police and MACC must investigate and respond,” Kasthuri stressed, adding that the Penang Welfare Department had also been notified. - Mkini
