“At least 7 lawyers incl Takiyuddin are set to defend Muhyiddin in court today for insulting royalties”

PERIKATAN Nasional chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin will have access to “at least seven legal counsellors” when he is charged at the Gua Musang Sessions Court today (Aug 27) for allegedly touched on issues related to race, religion and royalty (3R) in his speech during the recent Nenggiri by-election campaign.

Bersatu Kelantan chairman Datuk Kamarudin Md Nor said that the team of lawyers might also include PAS secretary-general. Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan who is also the PN chief whip.

All in all, preparations were made to combine the expertise of lawyers available from Bersatu and PN, including private legal practitioners, to jointly defend the Bersatu president, according to the Ayer Lanas state assemblyman.

“Which lawyer will lead the line-up will be decided by Muhyiddin) himself,” he told the media after officiating the Jewels Hotel Jiwa Merdeka programme in Kota Bharu yesterday (Aug 26).

Nevertheless, the State Tourism, Culture, Arts and Heritage Committee chairman expects Muhyiddin who is also the Pagoh MP to appear in court tomorrow to hear the charges against him.

Meanwhile, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Razarudin Husain has confirmed that the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) had issued an order for Muhyiddin to be charged at the Gua Musang Sessions Court today (Aug 27).

“The charge will be made under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948,” he said briefly when contacted by The Star yesterday (Aug 26).

Meanwhile, the Federal Court’s e-filing system shows that the hearing of the case will begin at 9am before Judge Nik Mohd Tarmizie Nik Mohd Shukri.

Previously, the media reported that the police had submitted the investigation paper on the Pagoh MP’s speech to the AGC on Aug 21 for further action.

Razarudin also mentioned that they had taken statements from Muhyiddin and 66 witnesses to assist in the investigation.

Recall that Muhyidin had in a viral video seemingly questioned the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong Suktan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah’s decision to appoint Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as the Prime Minister after the 15th General Election (GE15).

The video of him speaking at a ceramah at Felda Perasu on Aug 15 has since drawn harsh criticisms from various parties, including Pahang crown prince Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah.

At least 29 police reports were lodged against Muhyiddin who gave his statement to the police on Aug 20 along with 115 statutory declarations that were submitted to Istana Negara on Nov 21, 2022.

Muhyiddin has since defended his controversial remarks, noting that it was just a statement of facts and that he had no intention of insulting the royal institution of Malay Rulers. – Focus Malaysia
