DAP leaders have denied a viral message claiming that Jalan Yap Ah Loy in Kuala Lumpur has been renamed Jalan Palestin.
Bangi MP Syahredzan Johan refuted the rumour which had gone viral on TikTok.
He pointed out that it was Jalan Raja Laut 1 that was changed to Jalan Palestin, however, this was done years ago.
"It had gone viral on TikTok that Jalan Yap Ah Loy's name was purportedly changed to Jalan Palestin recently.
"This is fake news. The street that got its name changed to Jalan Palestin was Jalan Raja Laut 1.
"The name change was done four years ago in 2020. Do not be carried away by fake (news)!" Syahredzan said on X.
Verify before spreading
Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching also urged the public not to share unverified information.
Responding to the issue via an official DAP Whatsapp group, she said one can easily check online and find that Jalan Palestin and Jalan Yap Ah Loy are located at two different locations in the city.
"Tak pasti jangan kongsi, semak sebelum sebar (If unsure don’t share, verify first before spreading),” she said, referring to a government slogan advising the public to always check before forwarding messages.
According to past news reports, Jalan Raja Laut 1 was renamed Jalan Palestin on Sept 27, 2020.
Bernama quoted the then mayor Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan as saying that the move symbolised Malaysia’s support for the Palestinian people‘s struggle against oppression and towards a free Palestine state. - Mkini
