PUTRAJAYA
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has promised a fresh investigation into the death of Teoh Beng Hock, following a meeting between him and the former political aide’s family.

Anwar agreed to look into the details and discuss the case with Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain,
Beng Hock’s sister, Lee Lan, said after the meeting here today.

She said she had also proposed that international crime experts be brought in to assist with the investigation.

The case has been investigated for 15 years and has yet to be completed,
she told reporters after the meeting at Perdana Putra here.

The family’s lawyer, Ramkarpal Singh, said he and digital minister Gobind Singh Deo were also present at the meeting.

Any follow-ups will be passed to Beng Hock’s family through me as the family lawyer,
 Ramkarpal said.

Anwar later said in a Facebook post: “The government agrees for the police to reopen the investigation into the death of Teoh Beng Hock.

This investigation will be conducted transparently and fairly without interference from any party, especially taking into account the views of the Court of Appeal given on Sept 5, 2014.

In 2009, Beng Hock, an aide to then Selangor executive council member Ean Yong Hian Wah, was found dead on the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam, hours after he had arrived for questioning on the 14th floor, which housed the Selangor MACC headquarters.

A coroner’s inquest in 2011 delivered an open verdict. His family subsequently filed an appeal against the findings.

Three years later, the Court of Appeal set aside the open verdict and ruled that Beng Hock’s death was caused by multiple injuries as a result of unlawful acts by unknown persons. - FMT
