PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh says PKR must speak with one voice to project the party’s true strength.

PKR is determined to overcome a downturn in its recent fortunes and lead Pakatan Harapan and the government for the foreseeable future, the party’s new secretary-general Fuziah Salleh said.

In an exclusive interview with FMT, Fuziah acknowledged that the party has underperformed since its president Anwar Ibrahim was invited to lead the unity government following the 15th general election (GE15) in November 2022.

However, she said the party has identified various issues that have arisen and is in the midst of addressing them.

Fuziah said one of the issues PKR is seeking to rectify is the perception that the party is not united.

She said party unity is key to retaining the trust of the electorate.

“We are very diversified (in terms of opinions) and this diversity overshadows the united front we want to put on display.

“Speaking with (one) voice is important and I think we have lost that feature over time. We need to reclaim it.”

She said speaking with a united voice will project the party’s true strength.

PKR won 31 seats in GE15 and was duly rewarded when then Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah invited Anwar to form the present unity government.

Since then the party has suffered a slight blip in its performance at the polls, securing only 24 out of the 59 seats it vied for in the six state elections in August last year.

The party also lost three subsequent by-elections – in Padang Serai (Kedah), Kuala Terengganu, and Sungai Bakap (Penang).

Fuziah says those defeats represent a “wake-up call” for the party.

She also readily concedes that DAP performed better at GE15, securing 40 of the 55 seats it contested.

However, she said there is absolutely no concern that PKR’s longtime coalition partner will seek to wrest control of the coalition from the party.

“PKR will continue to lead PH and remain at the centrestage,” she said. - FMT
