PETALING JAYA: Electric vehicles (EVs) will serve as the official mode of transport for Asean leaders during Malaysia’s chairmanship of the group next year, says Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
Anwar said the decision to use EVs is in line with the country’s energy transition goals and sustainability efforts.
“In the past, Asean leaders were provided with luxury vehicles. Now, we are serious about sustainability and energy transition,” he was quoted by Berita Harian as saying. “Let’s show that in Malaysia, all vehicles provided for government leaders, ministers, and officials will be EVs only,” he said.
Anwar said the use of EVs would be more cost-effective than fossil fuel-powered vehicles.
“We will inform the heads of state that, although larger cars could be provided, these EVs are the largest available. We hope they will be satisfied with them,” he said at a Madani forum in Putrajaya. - FMT
