PETALING JAYA: Three people have died and nearly 95,000 have been evacuated after heavy rains caused floods across several states.
The National Disaster Command Centre’s website said as of 4pm, three people had died and 94,778 people had been evacuated to 527 temporary relief shelters in nine states.
A total of 63,761 people have been evacuated to 232 temporary relief shelters in Kelantan while 22,511 people have been evacuated to 228 temporary relief shelters in Terengganu.
Two of the deaths were in Kelantan on Wednesday, and the other was recorded in Terengganu yesterday.
Kelantan and Terengganu have been hit the worst by the floods, which deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said look set to be the worst in a decade.
“Given the severity of the situation, all parties have been mobilised to ensure the safety and welfare of flood victims,” Bernama quoted Zahid as saying yesterday.
The 2014 floods – the worst in history – claimed 21 lives and saw more than 500,000 people evacuated, mainly in Kelantan.
Earlier today, the meteorological department (MetMalaysia) issued a continuous rain warning affecting eight states – Kelantan, Terengganu, Perak, Pahang, Perlis, Kedah, Penang and Johor – until tomorrow. - FMT
