Give constructive criticism, PBM man tells opposition after govt’s ‘D’

Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM) has challenged the opposition to provide constructive criticism instead of slamming the government for the poor rating it recently received from electoral watchdog Bersih.

Deputy PBM information chief Krishna Govinth said that given its large number of seats in Parliament, the opposition should be a formidable force capable of keeping the government in check.

“However, what has the opposition done? Instead of offering constructive proposals or providing critical feedback, they choose to twist issues for the sake of cheap publicity,” he said.

“They have failed to carry out their role as an effective check and balance… The opposition needs to stop hiding behind populist issues and start acting as the true voice of the people.

“The reality is, we are now seeing government backbenchers like Hassan Karim and Wee Ka Siong playing a larger role in monitoring the government than the opposition. This is embarrassing and shows how dysfunctional the opposition is today.”

On Tuesday, Bersih gave the unity government a “D” grade for its performance over the last two years, which it said reflected Putrajaya’s limited progress in carrying out reforms as well as the gap between its rhetoric and action.

PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari then said the “D” grade was too high, telling Sinar Harian in an interview that he felt the government should have received an “F” instead.

Krishna said while the methodology Bersih had used in reaching its conclusion might be open to debate, the grade still sent a clear message that the government needed to expedite the implementation of the promised reforms.

He also urged the government not to delay in implementing the reforms it had promised, saying failure to do so would only disappoint its core voters and potentially affect its support in the next general election.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim yesterday said it was not impossible for his administration to receive an “A” for its performance in the near future after the “D” given by Bersih. - FMT
