PETALING JAYA
Takiyuddin Hassan (PN-Kota Bharu) says Perikatan Nasional will assist the family of a lorry driver who was denied bail after he was charged with dangerous driving yesterday.

Marhizan Johari, 51, yesterday pleaded not guilty to a charge of dangerous driving and causing the death of a 21-year-old woman after a container fell off his vehicle and crushed her car last week.

Takiyuddin noted that deputy public prosecutor Zulfadzly Hassan had asked the court to deny Marhizan bail after he flashed the peace sign when he was brought to court.

“He is a lorry driver who makes a modest income … Who will support his family now?” he said at the Dewan Rakyat today.

“PN will offer his family assistance.”

Marhizan, from Kangar, Perlis, was yesterday charged with dangerous driving, causing the death of Lee Zi Rou at Jalan Kebun Sireh, Bukit Mertajam, on Nov 13 at about 9.15am.

He was charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a sentence of five to 10 years, a maximum fine of RM50,000 and the suspension of his driving licence for five years.

Zulfadzly said the peace sign Marhizan flashed showed his apparent lack of remorse.

Magistrate Harith Mazlan denied Marhizan bail and set Jan 24 for the receipt of Puspakom’s reports on the crash, as well as medical and post-mortem reports.
