KUALA TERENGGANU
Kemaman has become the first district in Terengganu to be hit by floods due to the northeast monsoon after a downpour since early this morning.

The Terengganu state disaster management committee secretariat said a relief centre had been opened at Balai Raya Meraga Beris at 1pm to house 12 evacuees from two families.

“The evacuees are five men, three women and four children, from the Teluk Kalong affordable housing estate. The evacuation is still ongoing, including at Kampung Baru Kemasik,” it said.

Meanwhile, Kemaman police chief Hanyan Ramlan said police are monitoring flood-hit areas in the district to ensure safety and public order.

Several routes from Chukai to Paka, Dungun, have been flooded but are still accessible.

Earlier today, the meteorological department issued a continuous heavy rain alert for Terengganu, Pahang and Johor until this Saturday. - FMT
