KUANTAN
The Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, has ordered the setting up of a dedicated team to handle search and rescue operations in Sungai Pahang.

“It is time for Pahang to have a dedicated search and rescue team. We know the hotspots (for people going missing in Sungai Pahang) are in Chenor, Temerloh, Jerantut and Lipis, so we need to mobilise personnel from several districts and states to expedite the operations,” he said.

In a post on Kesultanan Pahang’s Facebook page, Al-Sultan Abdullah said the team could constantly monitor the situation along the river.

Earlier, he observed the search and rescue operation for a teacher from SMK Tengku Ampuan Afzan Chenor, who went missing while fishing at Sungai Pahang near the Chenor jetty in Kampung Chenor here on Sunday.

The sultan arrived at 1pm to observe the operation and meet the family of the teacher, Murdani Ab Rahman, 53.

The search and rescue operation, which began at 8pm yesterday, involves the Maran police, the fire and rescue department, the civil defence force, and the local community.

It was suspended at 9.30pm because of unfavourable weather conditions and resumed at 8am today with additional personnel and assets from other rescue agencies. - FMT
