PETALING JAYA
The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) says it is still studying the adaptability of the government’s new emolument scheme, following reports that its employees plan to picket over a lack of transparency in salary increments.

The commission said this is in line with its overall organisational restructuring programme that began last year.

“This initiative is aimed at bolstering organisational efficiency and ensuring equitable opportunities for all employees.

“Suhakam is guided by the government’s operational framework, specifically those related to governance, human resource management and emoluments, and undergoes regular audits in accordance with all relevant government circulars and standards.

“This rigorous oversight underscores Suhakam’s dedication to transparency, accountability and adherence to national regulations,” it said in a statement.

Earlier today, the Labour Solidarity and Learning Resources Association urged the government to intervene in the matter.

Its secretary-general, Gopal Kishnam Nadesan, said Suhakam needs more budgetary support to ensure employees receive the same salary and benefits as those under the new public service remuneration system (SSPA).

The picketing set for tomorrow morning concerns an announcement that three of Suhakam’s deputy secretaries received salary raises based on a different performance assessment system, while the commission’s staff were excluded from the SSPA.

“The association urges the government to act immediately to address the legitimate demands of the Suhakam employees,” said Gopal in a statement.

Suhakam also said it is open to discussion on the matter and “remains unwavering in our commitment to fostering a positive, collaborative work environment”. - FMT
