Hot, humid climate makes scrapping school neckties practical

ALOR STAR: Malaysia's hot and humid climate makes the Education Ministry's decision to drop the compulsory use of neckties in schools from the next academic session a practical move.

National Parents, Community and Private Sector Schools Engagement (PIBKS) deputy chairman Zainol Abidin Mohamad said student discipline had never been defined by attire, stressing that educational success should not be measured by what students wear.

"Discipline does not come from a necktie. It is built through strong values, effective school leadership, consistent role-modelling by teachers, and firm support from parents and the wider community," he said in a statement.

Zainol added that students' comfort and health were crucial to effective learning, noting that those who are physically comfortable are more likely to stay focused, engage positively, and perform better in class.

He said any policy change must be accompanied by a stronger emphasis on core educational pillars, including character formation, manners, moral values, self-discipline, identity, and a culture of respect among students.

Zainol said PIBKS would continue to support policies that prioritise students' well-being, provided discipline and school identity were upheld.

"Dress codes may change with time, but educational values and principles must never be compromised," he added.

Yesterday, the Education Ministry announced that students would no longer be required to wear neckties starting next year, as outlined in a circular dated Dec 17.

However, the ministry said wearing neckties would still be allowed if agreed upon by schools and parents. - NST
