PETALING JAYA:
Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin will step down as Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman effective Jan 1, 2026.

In a statement announcing his decision, Muhyiddin thanked the PN leadership for its support during his tenure as chairman.

Muhyiddin had led the coalition since Aug 7, 2020, when it was officially registered.

“I wish the PN leadership and the components all the best,” the former prime minister said.

His announcement followed the political crisis in Perlis, which saw PAS’s Sanglang assemblyman Shukri Ramli resigning as menteri besar and Bersatu’s Kuala Perlis assemblyman Abu Bakar Hamzah replacing him in the post.

PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari said earlier today that Muhyiddin had expressed his desire to step down as PN chairman.

“This is a wise decision at a time when PN is in need of new momentum for the impending 16th general election,” he said in a Facebook post.

Yesterday meanwhile, PAS Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden called for his party to take over the reins of PN.

He accused Bersatu, PAS’s partner in the coalition, of both weakness and betrayal in its lack of action against five assemblymen who withdrew support for Shukri.

The Alor Setar MP said it was clear that Bersatu had either lost control of its people, or had given them its blessing.

He also said it was time for PAS to take over PN, with Abdul Hadi Awang, the Marang MP, serving as coalition chairman. - FMT
