PAS ready to face by-elections, state polls in Perlis - Hadi

PAS has stressed that the party is ready to face any eventuality, including by-elections or a state election in Perlis, its president Abdul Hadi Awang said.

“We are ready for by-elections. Because now three PAS assemblypersons have fallen, how are you going to form a government?

“Perlis has only 15 seats - PAS has six, Bersatu has five - so how are you going to form a government?

“So, if there is a by-election, we are ready. If there is a state election, we are also ready,” he said at a press conference in Marang, Terengganu, today.

The Marang MP added that the party has gone through various political experiences in the past, including the fall of state governments due to votes of no confidence and defections by elected representatives, but PAS has remained committed to the principles of loyalty and party discipline.

“We have experienced situations like this in states before. There were votes of no confidence, assemblypersons being bought over, and all sorts of things. All of these are tests,” he said.

Memberships termination

On Wednesday, PAS announced that the party memberships of three Perlis state assemblypersons had been terminated with immediate effect.

It involved Saad Seman (Chuping), Fakhrul Anwar Ismail (Bintong), and Ridzuan Hashim (Guar Sanji).

Following this, Perlis state assembly speaker, Rus’ele Eizan, announced extraordinary vacancies in the seats mentioned.

Although the state assembly term has reached maturity at three years, Rus’ele said he believed there is a need for by-elections to be held for the seats.

Shukri Ramli

Earlier, several reports cited sources alleging that five Bersatu assemblypersons and three PAS assemblypersons had submitted statutory declarations to Perlis ruler, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail, stating that they had lost confidence in state Menteri Besar Shukri Ramli, who had announced his resignation yesterday.

In the 15th general election, Perikatan Nasional won 14 state seats in Perlis, comprising nine PAS assemblypersons and five from Bersatu, while one Pakatan Harapan assemblyperson from PKR won the Indera Kayangan seat.

Meanwhile, Hadi said PAS has also put forward names to be considered as candidates for the new Perlis menteri besar to replace Shukri.

Hadi said the party submitted names from among its six state assemblypersons for consideration and to seek the consent of the Perlis sultan.

However, he declined to disclose the identity of the candidates at this time.

Act against renegade Bersatu reps

In a separate statement, Perlis PAS Youth has urged Bersatu to take action against five of its state assemblypersons who were involved in the move to topple Shukri.

Its youth chief Haziq Asyraf said such action was necessary to ensure consistency in disciplinary measures, given that PAS itself had already acted against its three assemblypersons involved in the same issue.

“For Perlis PAS Youth, the stability of a government cannot be built on weak discipline and betrayal of the principles of the struggle.

“Terminating membership or taking disciplinary action is a bitter pill to swallow, but it is necessary to safeguard the party’s continuity.

“Such action is crucial to ensure that the ‘tree’ of PAS’ struggle does not rot from within due to the personal interests of certain individuals.

“We urge Bersatu to immediately take appropriate action against their assemblypersons who were involved in the movement to sign statutory declarations (SDs) to support a change in the state leadership,” said Haziq.

Yesterday, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man issued a similar call for Bersatu to take action against the lawmakers. - Mkini
