Thunderstorms, heavy rain expected in seven states, KL and Putrajaya

 


PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds across seven states as well as the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, effective until 7pm on Tuesday (Dec 23).

MetMalaysia, in a statement at 4.10pm, said the severe weather is expected to affect Kuala Krai in Kelantan; Hulu Terengganu in Terengganu; parts of Pahang (Jerantut and Maran); and multiple areas in Selangor, including Hulu Selangor, Gombak, Petaling, Hulu Langat and Sepang.

A similar warning has also been issued for parts of Negeri Sembilan (Seremban and Port Dickson).

In Sarawak, the affected areas include Kuching, Serian, Samarahan, Betong (Pusa and Betong), Sarikei (Meradong), Sibu, Mukah and Limbang.

In Sabah, the warning covers Pantai Barat (Putatan, Penampang, Kota Kinabalu, Tuaran, Ranau and Kota Belud); Sandakan (Telupid, Kinabatangan, Beluran and Sandakan); and Kudat.

MetMalaysia issues these warnings when there are signs indicating a thunderstorm with a rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour that is imminent or expected to occur for more than one hour.

A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning that is valid for a period not exceeding six hours for any single release.
