Umno sec-gen floats pullout after DAP MP's 'inhumane' jab on court ruling

Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki has fiercely criticised DAP lawmaker Yeo Bee Yin, suggesting that it may be time for the BN party to reassess its ties with allies in the Madani government.

Without holding back, he described the Puchong MP’s remarks on former Umno president Najib Abdul Razak’s house arrest bid as “extremely rude, excessive, and utterly lacking in humanity”.

“If one cannot even express a shred of sympathy, they should refrain from making disrespectful and hurtful remarks,” he added in a statement.

Asyraf emphasised that the person insulted is a former top leader, deeply loved by the entire Umno family, noting that the party now plays a pivotal role in forming the unity government.

“Perhaps it is time for Umno to reconsider the cooperation that has been established if there are still parties unwilling to appreciate Umno’s contributions and struggles over the years,” he warned.

Puchong MP Yeo Bee Yin

Yeo, also DAP’s national publicity secretary, has drawn sharp criticism from Umno leaders for suggesting that the High Court’s dismissal of Najib’s judicial review is yet another reason for celebration as the year ends.

Earlier, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi issued a terse, unnamed caution, urging not to pour fuel on an already raging fire amid rising pressure.

Following the court decision, Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh left no room for ambiguity, calling for Umno to exit the government entirely.

Umno supreme council member Johan Abd Aziz also accused DAP of disrespecting the powers held by the Malay rulers, claiming that Yeo’s remarks should be interpreted as an indication of the party’s stance as a whole.

“(Yeo’s statement) confirms the public’s concerns that DAP has failed to respect the foundations of the constitutional monarchy and continues to view matters of statehood through a lens of political arrogance.

“When DAP’s own leaders and elected representatives display such an attitude, it is clear that the problem is not merely an individual; it is a reflection of a party that is increasingly losing manners, sensitivity, and respect for the foundational principles of the nation,” Johan added.

‘Invalid under the law’

Kuala Lumpur High Court judge Alice Loke, in rejecting Najib’s judicial review this morning, ruled that the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s royal decree granting the former Umno president house arrest was invalid under the law.

The judge reasoned that this was because the addendum was issued outside of the Pardons Board meeting, and the board did not deliberate on it.

“I’m of the view that a house arrest order is not capable of execution, no legal provision for such a mechanism in Malaysia,” the judge said.

Former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak

Najib’s lawyer, Shafee Abdullah, later told reporters that the ruling diminishes the powers of the Malay rulers and vowed to file an appeal.

Najib, 72, has been in prison since August 2022 after the Federal Court upheld his conviction in the SRC International case.

On Dec 26, he will learn his fate in his 1MDB-related case involving RM2.3 billion, with judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah scheduled to deliver the verdict at 9am at the Palace of Justice, Putrajaya. - Mkini
