34 illegal immigrants detained in Subang Jaya apartment raid

 

A total of 280 people were inspected by the Immigration Department during the raid, resulting in the detention of 34 foreigners for various immigration offences.

SUBANG JAYA: Noise, drunkenness, fights, and alleged break-ins are troubling residents of Seri Nipah Apartment here amid a growing presence of foreigners.

Residents claimed the number of foreigners living at the complex had increased significantly, with many units allegedly rented out to as many as 10 occupants each.

A resident who only wanted to be known as Sofian, said the situation has led to overcrowding and frequent public disturbances.

"There are often instances of drinking and fights, which make us uncomfortable. We have to put up with the noise, especially when arguments break out," he said.

Sofian added that foreigners frequently loiter in common areas, including lifts and surrounding spaces, causing discomfort to families with young children.

Another resident, Siti, said the ongoing disturbances have severely affected their peace of mind, particularly at night.

"Sometimes we cannot sleep peacefully because we can hear people arguing. We have tried telling them to stop, but they do not listen. We are tired of dealing with this," she said.

Siti noted that foreign traders have also increasingly dominated a nearby Sunday market selling second-hand clothes and betel leaves, while several nearby shoplot businesses are allegedly operated by foreigners.

The complaints prompted the Selangor Immigration Department to launch an integrated enforcement operation at the apartment complex early today.

The operation, which began after midnight, targeted the area following intelligence indicating a high concentration of illegal immigrants.

A total of 280 people were inspected during the raid, resulting in the detention of 34 foreigners for various immigration offences.

The detainees, aged between 20 and 40, comprise 23 men and 11 women from Indonesia, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Thailand, the department said.

Offences detected included failing to produce valid identification documents, violating pass conditions, overstaying, and possessing unrecognised cards.

All detainees will be transferred to the Semenyih Immigration Detention Depot for further investigation and action. - NST
