Details of the new promotion system, to be in line with those of the public services, are expected to be announced on Aug 30.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the new promotion mechanism would align the armed forces and police systems with those of the public services, with details expected to be announced during the Merdeka celebration at Stadium Merdeka on Aug 30.
He said the implementation framework was being finalised by the chief secretary, Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, and the director-general of public services, Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz.
Anwar said the issue of armed forces’ promotions was raised directly with him during his visit to Syed Sirajuddin Camp in Gemas last month. Speaking at Terendak Camp in Melaka today, Anwar said the government would seek a higher defence allocation in next year’s budget to strengthen military readiness and improve personnel welfare.
The additional funds would go towards upgrading military quarters, building a new hospital and maintaining basic facilities, including water supply, among other plans.
Anwar said the defence allocation had been increased by more than 35% over the past three years by his government, but more investment was needed to ensure the country’s defence capabilities remain robust.
He called for military equipment procurement to be carried out systematically and transparently, warning against profiteering and excessive commissions involving third parties.
Anwar said Malaysia’s improving economic position, supported by a stronger ringgit, higher foreign investment and controlled inflation, would allow the government to consider increasing defence spending.
The federal government’s 2027 budget is scheduled to be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat on Oct 9. - FMT
