Can BN and PN strike a deal before the ‘blue wave’ crashes?

 

HIGH-stakes negotiations for the upcoming Melaka state election have surfaced early friction between Barisan Nasional (BN) and Perikatan Nasional (PN), prompting top figures to urge compromise and restraint.

Wawasan president Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin warned that both coalitions must be ready to compromise on seat distributions if they hope to preserve their combined political momentum.

Speaking after his party’s extraordinary general meeting, Hamzah emphasised that mutual concession is vital to keeping their overarching alliance intact.

“If we truly want to move together, we must embrace the spirit of compromise. The blue wave began in Johor and continued in Negeri Sembilan. To maintain it, tolerance is key,” he said.

The call for flexibility comes after BN chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh signalled BN’s plan to defend all 21 seats it currently holds in the state.

Addressing that position, Hamzah noted that negotiations ought to reflect the broader national political landscape rather than Melaka in isolation, given that every party aims to expand its footprint.

He affirmed that Wawasan intends to defend areas where it holds existing representation and strong grassroots backing – such as Bemban and Sungai Udang – stressing that the priority is winning, not just contesting.

Meanwhile, UMNO Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan called for calm regarding the seat distribution debate during a visit to the Public Works Department office in Alor Gajah. He cautioned leaders against making impulsive public remarks that could jeopardise upcoming talks with PN.

“Let us not quarrel too early. What can be negotiated, we will negotiate,” he said.

Ahmad highlighted that the cooperative framework BN and PN utilised in Negeri Sembilan should serve as a template for Melaka.

While BN aims to hold its 21 seats, he pointed out that the state’s remaining seven seats leave clear room for negotiation. He further clarified that BN’s unity agreement with Pakatan Harapan is restricted to the federal level, leaving state-level political arrangements in Melaka fully open to fresh negotiations. —  Focus Malaysia
