The Court of Appeal today binned former Hulu Selangor MP June Leow’s appeal against the Shah Alam High Court’s dismissal of her defamation lawsuit against a voter, M Ravi, over remarks made on the construction of a school.
Bernama reported that a three-member bench comprising judges Azizul Azmi Adnan, Ong Chee Kwan and Radzi Harun also ordered Leow to pay RM50,000 in costs.
In delivering the unanimous decision, Azizul said that while the impugned words carried a defamatory meaning suggesting dishonesty, the court found that the allegation did not refer to Leow.

June Leow He further stated that insofar as the posting related to the plaintiff, she was only accused of failing to take action, which could be construed as incompetence. Azizul, however, said Leow had not pleaded the lesser form of defamation in her case.
Leow, who was Hulu Selangor MP from 2018 to 2022, had filed the libel suit against Ravi in 2021 over a Facebook post published on July 17, 2020. The High Court dismissed her suit on Feb 8, 2024.
Contractors seeking to invoke the variation of price (VOP) clause due to higher construction material costs must provide the Statistics Department (DOSM) with evidence and details of their actual expenses.
Deputy Works Minister Ahmad Maslan said DOSM’s data as of Aug 10 showed that prices for most construction materials remained relatively stable, with steel and cement recording increases of less than one percent.
He also said certain materials, such as sand, recorded an increase of up to 19 percent in some places, but this data needs to be supported by actual information from contractors in the field.

Deputy Works Minister Ahmad Maslan "We have to use the statistics provided by DOSM. If DOSM says it hasn't increased by more than one percent, that's what we want to state. If it doesn't increase by more than one percent, how can we give the VOP?" Bernama reported him saying.
Ahmad also urged contractor groups, including the Malay Contractors Association of Malaysia, the Bumiputera Contractors Association of Malaysia and Class F contractors, as well as other business associations, to provide DOSM with invoices and other evidence showing their construction material costs.
